Rockets Soar To 36-0 Lead, Cruise Past SC Cougars

RAPID RIVER---The Rapid River High School football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 52-32 win over Superior Central Thursday night in Rapid River.

The Rockets led, 36-0, at halftime, before the Cougars scored to stop the running clock, and then scored four more times against Rapid's reserve players in the second half.

Rapid River rushed for 295 yards and threw for 100 more.

Austin Wicklund had 193 yards on eleven carries, and scored four touchdowns on the ground.

Rapid River Quarterback Mason Berglund completed four of eight passes for those 100 yards, including two touchdown passes...one to George Kanyuh, and the other to Wyatt Schwartz.

Besides Wicklund's running totals, Craig Martin added 65 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. And Berglund had 37 yards on 14 carries.

It wasn't all perfect for Rapid River, though, as the boys made a few mistakes in the early part of the game. They fumbled twice, and had trouble running up the middle at times.

"We do a zone block scheme," Rockets Assistant Coach Greg Rubick said. "We had miscommunication at times early on. They were sending inside linebackers into the gaps, so we had to start going outside, and Austin (Wicklund) had some nice runs."

Rubick says that it's tough to surprise opponents these days, given Rapid River's success of making it to two state title games and five Final Fours in the last four years.

"This is our fifth year in eight-man football and everyone has film," Rubick said.

He singled out senior Mike Larson for a "really, really nice game" on the line. And Rubick says his team made some adjustments and was "much better in the second quarter".

Rapid River (2-0) has an early-season challenge next Friday, when the boys travel to Cedarville for an afternoon game (4:00). Cedarville gave the Rockets their only loss last season: in the state semifinals. Superior Central will host Pellston next Saturday.
