Broncos Earn Split With A's In First Home Games

BARK RIVER---The Bark River-Harris High School baseball team played on its home field for the first time in modern school history Thursday night.

The Broncos split a doubleheader with the Alger County A's, losing the first game, 11-3, and winning the nightcap, 7-3. It was the first home games in Bark River since 1955.

Alger County, which is a mixture of kids from Superior Central, Munising, and Mid Peninsula, was not ready to let the Broncos enjoy their home opener.

The A's scored five runs in the top of the first inning as Nick Goings had an RBI single and Lucas Rittenger and Josh Herndon each had two-run hits that made it a 5-0 game.

Bark River-Harris got its first run in the second inning on hits by Mike Hall and Matt Richer, and an error on Sam Hall's pop fly to shot center field.

BR-H scored again in the fourth inning on a double by Richer and an RBI single by Kaden Mustafa.

And in the sixth inning, Mustafa's RBI ground-out scored the Broncos' final run.

Mustafa and Richer both had two hits for the Broncos. Mid Peninsula's Dooner Englund had four hits in the opener for the A's, and he pitched all six innings to earn the win. Englund allowed six hits and three walks, and he struck out nine batters along the way.

Brad Vandermissen took the loss for BR-H, allowing all 11 runs in three innings of work.

Jace Briggs finished the game, allowing no runs in the last three innings.

Englund led the A's at the plate with four hits in five at-bats. Avery Nachtman, Colton Richmond, Brandon Maki, and Rittenger all had two hits apiece for Alger County in the opener.

The A's had 16 base hits in Thursday's first game. BR-H had six. In the second game, three pitchers combined for the victory for the Broncos.

Richer tossed the first three innings, allowing three runs.

Drake Draze faced the next five batters, striking out two of them. And Logan Heim finished the game, striking out five of the six batters that he faced. At the plate in the second game, Cole Rae and Ryan Arnt were both 3-for-3. Richer was 2-for-3.

Bark River-Harris hosts North Central in a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
