Bark River-Harris Beats Stephenson For First Win

DAGGETT---It's been 60 years since the Bark River-Harris High School offered a varsity baseball program for its students. On Thursday, the Broncos partied like it was 1955 as they cruised to an 8-5 win over the Stephenson Eagles at the Daggett Field.

"We were really excited," BR-H Head Coach Mark Heim said. "Our first win since 1955! It was a very good win. The fans were happy for the boys. It was a great all-around game."

Drake Draze, who played varsity baseball for the Gladstone Braves last spring, got the ball for the first BR-H game in this new program's history. And Draze was in control of the Eagles, carrying a no-hitter into the final inning. He was two outs away from a historic win, but Draze had to settle for a three-hitter as the Eagles rallied at the end.

"Drake ran out of gas at the end," Heim said. "I was thinking about how long I should stay with him. He pitched a great game."

Ryan Arndt struggled in relief, but managed to get the final two outs to get the save.

For the record, the first BR-H run in "modern history" was driven in by Heim's son, Logan, who played for the state champion Gladstone Indians American Legion baseball team that summer.

Heim drove in three runs in all.

Draze was also big at the plate, going three-for-four, and Cole Ray went one-for-three with three runs batted in.

"We didn't have a lot of big hits, but we did a good job bunting guys around," Coach Heim said. "It was a lot of small ball. And a hit here and there."

Bark River-Harris does not play again until April 28th, when the boys travel to Norway to face the Knights. Then, the Broncos will have the first-ever home games on April 30th when they face the Superior Central Cougars in a doubleheader. The games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
