Eskymos Break 'Century Mark' In Copper Country

HOUGHTON---The Houghton High School boys basketball team stayed with its game plan right to the bitter end as the Gremlins hosted the Escanaba Eskymos Tuesday night.

A full-court press defense was used for all 32 minutes of the game...literally.

But the result was not kind for the Gremlins as the Eskymos rolled to a 105-69 victory, which improved Escanaba's record to 3-0 on the season.

"They pressed the whole game, and we attacked the whole game," Escanaba Coach Tracy Hudson said. "We got a lot of lay-ups in transition, and we got a lot of three's in transition. They tried to trap us in back court, and we attacked in front court."

Escanaba led, 56-36, at halftime. Hudson says the team was well-prepared.

"I felt like we had a team that could run with them," Hudson said. "They came at us the whole game. You can score a lot of points when you get open 'threes' and you hit them. We had 20 turnovers, but it was a 100-point game. That's the same as ten turnovers in a 50-point game. It was a crazy game. The kids are really pumped up."

Houghton had crossed the 80-point barrier in its previous wins over Eagle River, Wis., and L'Anse. "They are a very good team," Hudson said.

All twelve Eskymo players scored in this game. Five of them scored in double figures: Tyler Skufca had 17 points, including five three-point baskets.

Sam Molnar also scored 17, and Chris Rose added 15 points. Jake Rodman had 14 points and Tyler Hardwick scored 12. Danny VanEffen contributed eight points.

The Eskymos made ten of 22 three-point attempts in the game.

"We weren't trying to run up the score," Hudson said. "I think the next time we play at our place, they might try something different."

Escanaba hosts Gladstone this Friday night. It will be the season-opener for the Braves, who have had their scheduled games against Ishpeming and Marquette postponed.
