MENOMINEE---The Menominee High School boys basketball team won a MHSAA Division Three district championship Friday night, beating the Iron Mountain Mountaineers, 72-29, in the Menominee High School Gym.
Talan Woods led the Maroons with 25 points as his team improved to 20-4 on the season.
“Teammates got me the ball, and I'm open, so I was just looking to score tonight,” Woods told RRN Sports. “It feels great. I think we all played good. That was probably one of the best defensive games we've had all year. And we're ready for Westwood.”
That will be quite the battle in the regional semifinal Tuesday night, between the Upper Peninsula's top two Division Three teams. The Patriots (23-1) easily beat West Iron County, 71-32, Friday night to win their district championship.
“I think we've just got to guard (Ethan) Marta and we've got to help in gaps,” Woods said. “We've got to slow him down, and try to let the other kids score.”
Westwood beat Menominee, 55-52, in the only regular season match-up.
Tuesday's regional semifinal game will be played at the Kingsford High School, starting at 7:45 ET/6:45 Central. There will also be a Division Four regional semifinal game on that floor between Forest Park and North Dickinson, which will start at 5:00 CT.
The Menominee-Westwood game will be broadcast live on FM-103.7 across the southern Upper Peninsula with Josh Kellner at the mic.
