GLADSTONE---The Kingsford Flivvers football team jumped to a big early lead and cruised to a 25-13 win over the Gladstone Braves Friday night at the Marble Athletic Field. The game was played in Gladstone because major renovations at Flivver Field are not yet completed.
Flivver senior quarterback Jack Kriegl, a Michigan Tech University recruit, rushed for a touchdown on the ground and threw two touchdown passes in the win. Kingsford's defense also scored four points on a pair of safeties.
Kriegl's six-yard touchdown pass to Gaige Sorenson followed the opening kickoff that Kriegl broke free for a 53-yard gain, setting Kingsford up in Braves territory. After a three-and-out by the Braves offense, the Flivvers went ahead 14-0 when Kriegl broke free for a 34-yard touchdown run.
The score went to 16-0 when Kingsford got a safety after Braves quarterback Cooper Sanville was pressured in his own end zone, and he threw the ball away to avoid being sacked. Then after the Flivvers received the free kick, Kriegl found a wide-open Blake Tomasoski for a 42-yard touchdown pass.
Kingsford's lead was 23-0 at that point before the Braves went into the two-minute drill. Sanville made a great athletic play to scramble and then throw a deep ball to Aiden Burie, who caught it inside the Kingsford 10-yard-line.
One play later, Sanville hooked up with Burie for the four-yard touchdown pass. Luke Inghram made the extra point kick, and it was 23-7 at the half.
Gladstone got the ball first to start the second half, but could not move the ball. The Flivvers ended up with another safety when they stuffed Owen Gereau in the end zone, making it 25-7.
Gladstone scored on the final play of the game on a run by Gereau.
Kingsford improved to 2-1 on the season and will face the 2-1 Negaunee Miners next weekend. The Braves fell to 0-3 and will take on the 0-3 Hancock Bulldogs for Gladstone Homecoming next Friday night.
