BARK RIVER---The Escanaba High School boys basketball team jumped to a 19-0 lead Tuesday night and cruised to a 62-35 win over the Bark River-Harris Broncos in Harris. The Eskymos swept the season series from the Broncos and improved to 6-4 on the season.
"It gave us a chance to run some things that we've only been able to run in practice, so we got to do them in a game, so that was really positive," Escanaba Coach Scott Hanson said. "Javon Stevenson, I thought, played really well (13 points). I thought Alex Morgan off the bench played well (12 points). We just keep chugging along, and the No. 1 team in the U.P. (Iron Mountain, on the road) Thursday for us."
Ben Johnson scored three times on the baseline and David Romps scored twice during that 19-0 first quarter as the Eskymos found life easy in the paint against the Broncos.
And at the other end, the Broncos could not put the ball in the hoop, in fact, had multiple airballs of shots that they kept taking from the perimeter. But that improved in the second quarter.
BR-H senior Ethan Ives scored back-to-back triples and Ben Knauf added a three of his own to get the Broncos back to within 19-9. Escanaba led, 31-17, at halftime.
"You spot a team 19-0 at the end of the first quarter, things are pretty dark," BR-H Coach Nick Lippens said. "Things are pretty gloomy. But I threw some kids in who decided to step up and played some pretty good minutes. And it's a ten-point game, and we were down 14 at the half, so we won the second quarter."
Ives led the Broncos (2-7) with 19 points as BR-H gets ready to host Norway Friday night.
For Escanaba, it was balanced scoring, with Stevenson scoring 13 and Johnson and Morgan both contributing 12 points. For his part, Morgan was happy for the opportunity.
"I played pretty good," Morgan said. "I was getting low-post bucket, and finishing my lay-ups. I think we all played pretty well, especially our reserve players. We got the job done."
Escanaba's schedule gets tougher, with a trip to Iron Mountain (8-0) on Thursday, and then back home next Tuesday to face Westwood (6-5).
