MIDLAND, Mich.----The Negaunee Junior Little League All-Star baseball team (14u) arrived in downstate Midland on Tuesday in time for opening ceremonies for the Central Regional Tournament, which begins on Wednesday. The state champion Miners were among the seven other state champions (plus the host team) at a Parade of Champions.
All nine teams walked onto the Larkin Township Fields for the ceremonies as the players' names were read on the public address system. They carried their championship banners, as well as the flags for the state that they are representing.
Then, after the national anthem, reciting of the Little League Pledge and Parents Pledge, there was a ceremonial first pitch thrown out. Then, the boys were treated to a picnic with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and potato salad.
These teams traveled a long way to get here, except for Shepherd Little League, which won the Michigan District One championship and is in as the host team.
In Negaunee's case, this location for the regionals, the first in Negaunee Little League history, is actuallu closer to home than the location where the boys won their improbable state championship ten days ago. This trip is 329 miles, compared with 423 miles to the Georgetown Little League fields where the state tournament was held.
Negaunee is the second-closest team in the tournament. The others are from Madison, Wis., River Forest, Ill., Greenwood, Ind., Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Rochmond, Ky.; Carroll County, Mo.; and Andover, Ohio.
Negaunee's game against Richmond, Ky., will be broadcast live on FM-100.3 in Marquette, FM-93.5/AM-600 in Escanaba, and on-line at www.radioresultsnetwork.com
