KALAMAZOO---The Gladstone and Iron Mountain High School wrestling teams had their seasons come to an end on Friday in the MHSAA state quarterfinals at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo.
Iron Mountain lost to defending state champion Hudson, 61-18, in Division Four. And in Division Three, Gladstone lost to Whitehall, 48-24. Both the Braves and Mountaineers will be well-represented at the indvidual state finals next weekend at Detroit's Ford Field.
WHITEHALL 48, GLADSTONE 24---The Braves picked up four victories, all on pins, in a losing effort against the third-seeded Vikings.
Drew Hansen pinned Whitehall's Max Krukowski in the middle of the third period (5:10) to give the Braves a 6-0 lead in the match.
But the Vikings won the next five matches, two of them on pins, to build a 22-6 lead, before Gladstone's Austin Solis got an easy pin over Doug Verberkmos in the 157-pound weight class.
That brought the Braves to within 22-12, but the Vikings won the next two matches on a major decision and a pin, to open up a 32-12 lead.
The Braves stayed alive in the match when Cole Potier got a pin so fast if you blinked, you missed it. He needed just 14 seconds to pin Easton Wisniewski in the 190-pound weight class, bringing Gladstone to within 32-18 on the scoreboard.
But Whitehall big guys Jackson Cook (215 pounds) and Shane Cook (heavyweight) put the match away with a major decision and a pin, respectively, making it a 42-18 score.
The Braves finished on a strong note, however, as Eli Terrien needed only 25 seconds to pin Kolten Weiler in the 113-pound weight class, making it a 48-24 score.
HUDSON 61, IRON MOUNTAIN 18---The defending state champion Tigers showed why they're the top seed this season, and why they have been in the state title match in 13 of the last 14 years. The Tigers won the first six matches, five of them on pins, to take a 34-0 lead.
The Mountaineers got their first win at the 126-pound weight class as Tyler Winch pinned Aiden Lopinski in just 1:14. And the Mountaineers got another win when Shawn Mcquire, who "wrestled up" so he wouldn't have to face Winch again, pinned the Hudson coach's son, Cole Marry, in just 1:53 at the 132 pound weight class, bringing IM to within 34-12.
The Mountaineers managed one more victory: by Fulton Stroud, in the 165-pound weight class. He pinned Hudson's Calix Campbell with 30 seconds left in his match.
