MONTAGUE, Mich.---
The Gladstone High School wrestling team took the long nine-hour trip downstate on Friday, and came home with a second place trophy from the 16-team Eric Scott Mat Cat Classic, hosted by Montague High School.

Hudsonville won the overall team championship with 204.5 points. The Braves, the only Upper Peninsula team at the tournament, were second with 182 points. Fremont was third with 144 points, followed by Petoskey (129.5), Lakeview (126) and Niles-Brandywine (112 points).

The Braves had four guys make the finals, and three of them won their brackets.

Senior Cole Potier dominated on the mat just like he did as a running back on the Braves football team. The 190-pounder pinned all four of his opponents to win the bracket.

He started with a pin over Fremont's Kahi Noordyk in 37 seconds, then in the quarterfinal, Potier pinned Jacob Millward of Hudsonville in 2:18.

In the semifinals, Potier pinned Peyton Peterson of Muskegon Mona Shores in just 43 seconds, and in the championship match, it took just 76 seconds for Potier to pin Jaxon Ruttle of Muskegon Orchard View.

In the 144-pound weight class, Austin Solis also cruised to a championship. He received a first round bye, so he went to the quarterfinal round, where it took him just 30 seconds to pin Zachary Wierenga of Hopkins High School. In the semifinals, it was an even faster pin: 25 seconds to fall Cooper Lengkeek of Spring Lake. The championship match ended in the second period when Solis got a tech-fall with a 17-1 win over Jaden Vanderwall of Petoskey.

And at 126 pounds, Gladstone's Drew Hansen also cruised to a championship. Hansen also received a first round bye, and in the quarterfinals, he pinned Tobias Melton of Muskegon High School in 2:35. Hansen won his semifinal match over Petoskey's Ryan Cook on a 15-0 tech fall. And in the championship match, Hansen outscored David Fielder of Hanover-Horton High School on an 11-7 decision. Hansen is now 15-0 so far this season.

One other Braves wrestler reached the championship match in his weight class. 113-pounder Eli Terrien received a first round bye, and then easily won his quarterfinal match over Hudsonville's Bryce Beam on a pin in 1:33. In the semifinal round, Terrien beat Maximus Pigeon of Hopkins on a 10-5 decision. But in the championship match, Terrien lost to Cameron Perez of Lakeview High School on a 5-1 decision.

Gladstone 165-pounder Jack Savard made the podium by finishing in third place. He won his first match by pinning Miles Rusick of Muskegon Catholic Central in 1:40.

Savard then won his quarterfinal match over Petoskey's Tyler Dohm on an 11-7 decision, but in the semifinals, Savard was pinned by Jaxon Siler of Hudsonville in just 15 seconds. Savard bounced back to win his third place match over Doug Hawley of Niles-Brandywine on a 12-4 major decision.

It was a frustrating day for Gladstone heavyweight Gavin Depuydt. He won his first two matches on pins, beaying Chance Crawford of Fremont in 1:07, and then pinned Gordon Kenney of Lakeview in 41 seconds. But in the final seconds of the second period of his semifinal match against Muskegon's Mark Thompson, Depyudt rolled his ankle and had to forfeit. He also had to forfeit his semifinal match, so he had to settle for fourth place.

Trevor Thorbahn also made it to the podium for Gladstone. The 157-pounder ended up battling from the loser's bracket to take fifth place. He won his opening round match by pinning Landen Arvey of Muskegon Orchard View in 1:36.

But Thorbahn was pinned in the quarterfinals by Gavin Schoff of Niles-Brandywine in 1:07.

That dropped Thorbahn into the consolation round, were he had to win three matches to get a spot on the podium (there were only six spots on the podium, not eight).

Thorbahn won his first consolation match over Michael Moore of Montague on a pin at 2:37. Next, Thorbahn pinned Aaron Mazurek in 1:58. And in the fifth place match, Thorbahn beat Boston Noel-Haverkate of Hudsonville on an 8-1 decision.
