GLADSTONE--- The Gladstone Minor Little League All-Stars beat Rogers City 10-4 to advance to the state semifinals. An Escanaba win would have set up the rivalry in the semis, but West Portage topped Escanaba 5-0 scoring all five runs in the sixth inning.
GLADSTONE 10 vs. ROGERS CITY 4--- When Gladstone lost to Escanaba in the district championship, they thought their season was over. They received new life when a district declined to send a team and were awarded a spot.
There may have been doubts, but Coach Joe Larson said, “It’s tough, I know that when we did opening ceremonies and the girls didn’t have a banner to carry they felt a little left out but I think they are over that now and we all feel like we belong here.”
Gladstone used a big second inning and another dominant performance from Addy Sanville in the circle to secure their spot in the next round.
Sanville pitched five innings of no-hit ball while walking five and striking out fourteen in the victory. At the plate Sanville had two hits including a triple and drove in two runs.
A seventh run second inning put Gladstone in control of the game with an 8-0 lead.
It was a hit parade as Gladstone tallied six hits in the inning including RBI from Ellie Sanville, Reagan Carter, Addy Sanville, and Ruby Tuljus.
With an 8-0 lead Gladstone changed pitchers and Rogers City struck. A triple and a double drove in runs and then a Gladstone error opened the door for two more runs to cross to cut the lead in half.
Addy Sanville returned to the circle in the fifth inning and continued her impressive start.
Two errors put runners on base for Gladstone and they would both come around to score on wild pitches and extend the lead out to 10-4.
Gladstone shut the door in the sixth inning to win and advance to the semifinal game on Tuesday.
“Its gonna be timely hits. If we can get a couple timely hits when we need them I think we are going to be okay,” Larson said after watching the West Portage game.
WEST PORTAGE 5 vs. ESCANABA 0---Escanaba and West Portage were locked in a pitcher’s duel through five innings when West Portage opened the flood gates to knockout Escanaba.
West Portage had put baserunners on in every inning but was unable to push a run across due to some timely defense and pitching from Braelyn Grandchamp and Escanaba.
Escanaba was stifled all day but had their best chance in the fifth inning when Kinsley Williams singled to start the inning and promptly moved around to third. Tessa Jewell struck out the next three batters to strand Williams at third base and keep the game tied.
The breakthrough for West Portage came in the sixth and final inning when with the bases loaded Escanaba committed an error that allowed the first run of the game to score. Two more runs scored on wild pitches, and Noelle Mathieu got a big two run single to put the game seemingly out of reach.
Jewell sat down Escanaba in order in the sixth to secure victory and setup a matchup with Gladstone in the semifinals.
The Escanaba Minor All-Stars’ season comes to an end after winning the District 10 Championship and advancing to the quarterfinals of the State Tournament.
An emotional Coach Brian Parlatto said of his team, “It takes a village, and I’m just the one of the title of head coach but we all coached them. It was a blast, and I couldn't be more proud of them.”
After the impressive showing from both Escanaba and Gladstone Parlatto said, “Escanaba softball is going to be great for years to come, Delta County for that matter. We had two of the top eight teams in the state.”
