Trevillian, Pugh Long Balls Lead Flivvers To Trophy

EAGLE RIVER, Wis.---The Kingsford High School baseball team won two games Saturday to take the championship of the Northland Pines Tournament in Eagle River.

It was a four-team tournament, with two semifinals, a consolation game, and championship.

The Flivvers beat the Cheqaumegon Screaming Eagles, 5-2, and then Wrightstown edged the host Northland Pines team, 6-5, on a walk-off, two-run single by Issac Rodgers in the bottom of the seventh inning. The third place game went to Cheqaumegon, 6-3.

That set up the championship game between Kingsford and Wrightstown, and things did not start well for the Flivvers. The Tigers got RBI singles from Trevor Vandehey and Rodgers in the first inning to go up 2-0 against Kingsford starting pitcher Gavin Trevillian,

It stayed that way until the fourth inning, when the Tigers took a 3-0 lead on two hits and a groundout, but Kingsford came back with the long ball.

Adreas Finley was safe on an error with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, then Sawyer Pugh smoked a two-run home run over the left field fence to bring the Flivvers to within 3-2.

Then in the fifth inning, the Flivvers played "small ball". Josh Weber got a lead-off single to left field, and then Garrett Brown bunted. He was safe, and then Dennis Neuens also bunted, and the Tigers second baseman couldn't handle it. That loaded the bases.

Which brought up Trevillian. And he smacked a grand slam home run over the left field fence to give the Flivvers a 6-3 lead. The Flivvers had a chance to add more runs when Finley singled, Pugh walked, and Riley Juneau bunted for another infield hit.

That reloaded the bases, and a fielder's choice grounder scored the Flivvers' seventh run.

An error, single, and sacrafice fly plated a run for the Tigers in the seventh inning, but the Flivvers got the final out on a grounder. Trevillian reached his 105-pitch count, but got the win (along with the grand slam). On the mound, he gave up ten hits, and he hit two batters, but didn't walk any, and he was able to make the pitches he needed.

Kingsford improved to 9-6-1 on the season. Wrightstown fell to 13-8.
