BATTLE CREEK---The Carney-Nadeau Wolves volleyball team put up a spirited effort in the Division Four state semifinals Friday, but made too many mistakes and lost to Auburn Hills Oakland Christian, 3-1. The scores were 23-25, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25.
The Wolves were plagued by servive errors, especially in the fourth set, and they tried to overcome a collapse that cost them the first set that they appeared to have well in hand.
The Lancers had a rough start to the match, with more errors than kills, and Carney led throughout the first set. It looked like the Wolves would get the upper hand, racing out to a seven-point lead at 23-17. But Carney was stunned when Oakland Christian scored eight straight points.
The Wolves did not give up, however. They fell behind several times in the second set, and at one point, trailed 14-10. Carney scored four straight points to tie the match, and it stayed closed down the stretch. The Wolves trailed 21-20 but scored five straight points on a Malorie Baumler service run to win the set. Taylor Kedsch had three kills during that five-point run.
The pivitol third set saw the Lancers score four of the first five points, and they gradually built a lead. Carney fell behind, 11-4, and never got closer than four points in that set.
That set up a must-win fourth set for Carney-Nadeau.
But the Wolves fell behind, 7-1. Abigail Franey had two service aces, the Wolves had a service error, and Kaylee Page had two kills during that run. The Wolves trailed just 19-18 when the Lancers made two straight errors after a Liana Blahnik kill. But Oakland Christian scored five straight points to make it 24-18 and pretty much ended the match.
Blahnik led the Wolves with 18 kills, and Kedsch finished with 14 kills. Haley Ernst had 25 digs and Mackenzie Welcher had 22 digs.
Page led Oakland Christian with 21 kills.
