ESCANABA---The Marquette Minor Little League All-Stars (age 9-10) won the championship of the Yooper Tournament Monday night, beating Negaunee, 4-3, in Escanaba. It was the first time in the 25-year history of the tournament where two Marquette County teams faced off in the championship game.
Negaunee scored three runs in the first inning before Marquette came back with two runs in the bottom half. Marquette tied it in the second inning and then scored the tie-breaking run in the bottom of the third inning.
That was all the scoring in a well-played game.
Marquette had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning but Kyle Moyer was robbed of a base hit and two RBI by Negaunee shortstop Morgan Robar.
In the final inning, Negaunee had the bases loaded with two out when Ethan Gauthier hit a chopper that Marquette pitcher Halen McCollum got to. He grabbed the ball, and started running for the first base bag. He got there in time. Game over.
