GLADSTONE---Hunter Eichhorn won his fourth straight MHSAA Division Three Upper Peninsula golf championship on Thursday, and his Carney-Nadeau Wolves lifted the trophy for a third straight year. DeTour, meanwhile, won the girls U.P. championship.
Eichhorn blistered the Irish Oaks Golf Course with a six-under par 66, winning medalist honors by four strokes over Cedarville's Avry Freel.
The Wolves won the team trophy by 13 strokes over second place Cedarville, 327-340, with North Central (361) finishing third and Ontonagon (368) taking fourth.
Eichhorn, who will play golf at Marquette University in Milwaukee next year, shot four under par on the back nine, and was pushed for most of the afternoon by Freel. It was, for Freel, his best score of the year, and he is headed to Ferris State University.
Carney's win was not Eichhorn's doing alone. He had help from Mason Linder, who tied for third with an 80, and Chase Linder, who was in a four-way tie for sixth with an 86.
North Central's top golfer was Ben Snyde, who shot an 80 and finished tied for third. He will be behind the plate on Friday as the NCA Jets baseball team plays in the district tournament. Fellow Jet Hunter Riley, who also plays baseball, shot an 86 and was a part of that four-way tie for sixth with Chassell's Blade Warren and Nick Pietila.
Chassell finished fifth in the team scores with a 374, with Engadine sixth (405), Dollar Bay seventh (415), Big Bay deNoc eighth (426), and Mackinac Island ninth (437).
EASTERN UP GIRLS ON TOP---The girls championship was largely a battle between two eastern U.P. teams as DeTour edged Cedarville for the trophy by three strokes, 403-406. Ontonagon took third (433), Big Bay deNoc was fourth (441), and another Eastern U.P. team, Engadine, finished fifth with a 484. North Central was sixth overall with 487.
The medalist was Cedarville's Lily Freel, making it a nice day for the Freel family. She shot an 82 to top DeTour's Madison Wilke, who carded an 85. DeTour's Kaalin Crawford finished third with an 86, and Chassell's Marli Hietala took fourth with a 93.
The top local golfer was Ariel Cousineau of Big Bay deNoc, who finished fifth with a 100. North Central's Jadie Linder was sixth overall after shooting a 101.
