HARRIS---The Gwinn Model Towners scored three touchdowns in the second half...including two just 16 seconds apart...and beat the Bark River-Harris Broncos, 28-14, Saturday afternoon.
The win improved Gwinn's record to 3-1, while BR-H fell to 2-2 on the season.
The BR-H defense was effective early in stopping the run, but the Gwinn passing game got off to a strong start as quarterback Kevin Roberts hooked up with Hunter Bachman for a 45-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion run by Bachman made it 8-0.
But the Broncos came back with a nice drive of their own, capped off by a five-yard touchdown run by Iver Stenberg on a third-and-three. Quarterback Jace Briggs ran in the two-point play.
Kyle Starnes pulled off the on-side kick, with Kadin Mustafa recovering, but the Broncos couldn't take advantage, turning the ball over on downs at the Gwinn 20.
But later in the second quarter, after a Mustafa interception, Briggs found Stenberg in the end zone for a 30-yard score. Bark River-Harris led, 14-8, at halftime.
But things changed in the third quarter.
First, Chris Bosworth broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run to tie the game. The Broncos stopped the two-point conversion, but the Model Towners pulled off an on-side kick at midfield. Roberts hooked up withBosworth for a long touchdown pass to put Gwinn in front, 20-14.
The two-point conversion made it 22-14. Just like that, two Gwinn scores in 16 seconds.
The BR-H offense continued to sputter, but Briggs was able to punt the Model Towners deep, to the four yard line. But the Bronco hopes of a defensive "big play" crashed when Bachman broke away for a 96-yard touchdown run down the sidelines early in the fourth quarter.
The Broncos had the ball twice more in the final minutes, but could not score.
BR-H travels downstate next Saturday to face one of the top teams in Division Eight: Climax-Scotts.
The game will be played at Petoskey High School. Kick-off is set for 3:00. The game will be baroadcast live on WUPF-FM (Eagle 107.3), starting at 2:30 ET.
