NEGAUNEE---The Menominee Maroons and Negaunee Miners ended in a 16-16 tie Thursday for the championship of the MHSAA Division One boys tennis U.P. championship. Kingsford was third with 12 points, and Escanaba was fourth with five.
Marquette finished fifth and Gladstone finished sixth.
Menominee was able to salvage aits share of the U.P. title on the next-to-last match of the day, when Levi Kempka and Jake Anglehart rallied to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Negaunee's Jacob Paupore and Matthew Jandron in the second doubles finals.
Negaunee got its half of the title a little while later, when the last match of the day, Thomas Sertich beat Kingsford’s Mikhail Roell.7-6 (7-2), 6-3, at #4 singles.
Negaunee has won or shared five of the last six U.P. championships, while this is the first one for Menominee since the late 1990's.
Menominee won the U.P. titles at #1, #2, and #3 doubles, while Negaunee won the #4 doubles title. Marquette's Alec Olivier beat Kingsford's Brady Hicks to win the #1 singles title, 6-2, 6-0. Negaunee's Eric Hurst beat Kingsford's Alek Shanks at # singles, 6-4, 6-4.
At #3 singles, Menominee's Mitchell Bourcher beat Negaunee's Luke Skewis, 6-4, 6-4.
Escanaba's points came on first-round wins for Josh Grassell (#3 singles) and Christer Carne (#4 singles), as well as a first-round wins at #1 doubles (Paul Carne and Addam Claes), #3 doubles (Brandon Kangas and Nathan Pascoe), and #4 doubles (Max Shariff and Dylan Rosenfeldt). None of them advanced past the second round, however.
