Marquette Pulls Away In 3rd Quarter To Top Braves

GLADSTONE---The Marquette Redmen outscored the Gladstone Braves, 19-9, in the third quarter and posted a 54-39 win Tuesday night in Gladstone.

The win allowed the Redmen to make up for an earlier-season loss to the Braves, and it dropped Gladstone to 9-9 on the season with two games left in the regular season.

Gladstone, playing less than 24 hours after hosting Westwood, stayed close throughout the first half. The Braves were down just 9-8 after a sluggish first quarter, and 21-18 at the half. They played without guard Ben Schwalbacgh, who was nursing a nagging foot injury.

But the third quarter told the tale, with the hot-shooting Redmen building a 40-27 lead entering the final quarter. Marquette then outscored the Braves, 14-12, from there.

Garrett Finkbeiner led the Redmen with 13 points. Reece Castor led the Braves with 15.

In the junior varsity game, Gladstone posted a 53-44 win as Rudy Peterson scored 13 points. Marquette's JV's were led by Bryce Brazeau with 15 points.

Gladstone travels to Escanaba for the all-Delta County battle Friday night. The game will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and at www.rrnsports.com.
