FLAT ROCK---The MHSAA Upper Peninsula Cross Country finals were held Saturday at the Beauchamp Farm in Flat Rock, located near Gladstone. The meet included boys and girls teams from more than three dozen schools, of all sizes, from across the U.P.
The 41 teams were broken down into three divisions. In Division One, Negaunee was the easy winner for the boys, while Marquette dominated the girls race. In Division Two, Ishpeming took the trophy for both the boys and girls races. And in Division Three, Chassell won both races, with Munising's girls and Dollar Bay's boys taking second.
Locally, the Escanaba boys finished in fifth place, with 115 points. The Eskymos were led by Joey Wolfe, who finished third overall in 16 minutes, 49.4 seconds. Gladstone finished eighth with 208 points, led by Jake Strasler's 17th place finish in 17:54.2.
In the girls' D-1 race, Gladstone finished sixth with 157 points. The Braves were led by Leigha Woelffer, who finished tenth overall in 20:19.8. Escanaba finished ninth with 225 points, with the top Eskymo being Megan Marenger (27th overall in 22:02.5).
In Division Two, North Central's boys finished third with 62 points, just one point behind second place Gogebic.
The Jets were led by Bryce Holle, who finished fourth overall in 17:58.3. NCA's Connor Robinson was ninth (18:25) and Seth Polfus was 12th (18:31).
The Manistique girls finished last in Division Two with 141 points, but Emerald Ashley McDonald made the podium with an eighth place finish in 22:10.1.
In Division Three, Mid Peninsula's boys finished eighth with 196 points, led by Kyle Klenow's ninth place overall placing (in 18:26.3). Carney-Nadeau took tenth place, with Mike Baumler finishing as the top Wolves runner (31st place, in 19:58.7).
Rapid River and Big BaydeNoc did not have enough boys runners for a team score, but had strong individual performances. Big Bay's Lucas Sundling took eighth place overall, finishing in 18:13. Rapid River's Jared Anderson took 15th overall, finishing in 18:32.
None of the local area's Division Three schools had enough girls to have team scores. Superior Central's Tori Tyner finished seventh overall (in 21:32.4). Big Bay deNoc's top runner was Brooke Dalgord, who finished in 45th place (in 24:26). Rapid River's top runner was Elizabeth Goodacre, who finished in 51st place (in 24:59).
The U.P. Finals will be held at the Beauchamp Farm in Flat Rock again in 2016.
