NMU Olympic Weightlifters Compete At Nationals

Three Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site weightlifters competed at the USA Weightlifting National Championships, Aug. 13-16 in Dallas.

Earning a second place finish in the 63-kilogram weight class was Vanessa McCoy, competing for PEAK fitness/NMU-OTS. McCoy lifted 87kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, totaling 192 kg for the competition.

Also finishing strong in the event were Chris Young of Oakland, Mich., who lifted a 285-kg total and Uli Manzanilla of Monticello, Minn., who lifted a total of 245 kg.

The competition served as the primary qualifier for the 2015 International Weightlifting Federation World Championships Nov. 20-28 in Houston.

“This finish puts Vanessa in a good position to earn a spot on the World Championships team,” said coach Vance Newgard. “All three athletes lifted well and it was a good way to begin another academic year.”
