Downstate Teens Learning Greco Wresting At NMU

MARQUETTE---Twenty-nine wrestlers  from Allendale High School are in Marquette learning a new style of the sport at the United States Olympic Training Site.

Local Three Sports reports that the wrestlers are being taught the Greco-Roman style of wrestling which tests both the strength and mental toughness of the sport.

Greco-Roman wrestling isn't common in high school, but it is an Olympic sport.

Mason Dyke, a junior at Allendale High School told WJMN-TV's Pete Francis: "This is how the world wrestles not just the United States. So, it's almost like our way of experiencing other countries in a similarity through wrestling in a difference of style."

Nick Dankowski, a senior wrestler, added: "What we do in high school, you can't lock your hands and you can use all parts of your body.  But, in Greco you can't use your feet offensively, so it's all upper body and like throws. It's completely different.  It's like learning a new sport you've never played before."

The students are also receiving instruction from NMU Olympic Training Site wrestlers.

Angel Perez, a sophomore wrestler, also told Local Three Sports: "It's really awesome. These guys are like Olympic wrestlers and it's a real privilege to be wrestling with them."

Austin Morrow, a NMU wrestler and trainer, said:

"Everyone at their level is going to know how to attack a leg because that's what they do every day, but if you add another move to your arsenal, you know, a throw or knowing how to control someone's upper body you're taking out the other person's game plan completely and you're forcing them to wrestle your match."

The camp continues through Wednesday and the team will also learn Freestyle wrestling technique.
