GLADSTONE---The Escanaba High School softball team pounded out 19 hits and beat the Gladstone Braves, 15-4, in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday night in Gladstone. The Eskymos also won the nightcap, 4-2, to complete a rare DH sweep.
It had been seven years since Escanaba beat Gladstone, other than a game in the Superior Dome back in early April. This time, it was outdoors, and it was dominant.
In the first game on Thursday, Escanaba scored seven runs in the third inning to build a big lead. The Eskymos pounded Braves pitcher Bre Winling in that inning as Callie Heller had a bases-clearing triple for three runs, and Michelle LaFave launched a two-run homer. Escanaba also scored four runs in the fifth inning, and three in the sixth.
Becca Piron had four hits and and two RBI in the opener for the Eskymos.
The Eskymos ripped 19 base hits in that opening game against Braves pitchers Winling and Jenna Steinhoff.
In the second game, RBI doubles by Piron and Jayme Frappier brought home a pair of runs in the third inning, and JJ Laviolette drove home a run with a double in the fifth inning, after Gladstone had scored twice in the top of the inning to get to within 3-2.
