Gladstone Girls Finish Regular Season With Victory

IRON MOUNTAIN---The Gladstone Braves bounced back from Tuesday night's loss to the Kingsford Flivvers by picking up a 45-28 road win Thursday over Iron Mountain.

The win allowed the Braves to close a successful regular season with a 14-5 record.

"This group, 14-5, that's a great ending right there," Gladstone Coach Karl Dollhopf said. "I thought we had good rotation. I thought all the girls played extremely hard."

"So, I'm extremely pleased with that. We found a way to get (defensive) stops, and I thought we were really good on loose balls. We came up with those 50/50 balls."

Senior Alexis St. Cyr scored 21 points to lead the Braves. She hit four three-point baskets, and got off to a good start in the first quarter after struggling against Kingsford.

"Kingsford tried to face-guard me and I was having a tough time," St. Cyr said. "But tonight as a team, we reaklly got it going, and got a 'team win'. It's a lot of fun when everyone scores and there's stats across the board. This team, being my senior year, it's really nice how close we are, and I think that really shows when we play."

Gladstone led, 13-9, after the first quarter, and 27-18 at halftime.

Junior Izzy Mathews gave the team a boost off the bench with two baskets in the second quarter, and she had three blocked shots on defense.

"I feel great," Mathews said. "It's my first year on varsity. Coming off the bench, it feels really good to go out there and do some really positive things for my team."

Junior Sam Sailer came off the bench for a steal and driving layup in that second quarter, and when Iron Mountain fouled her at the end, she made both free throws.

Ashley Edwardsen hit two early three-pointers to set the tone and scored eight points.

Iron Mountain finished its regular season with a 10-10 record.

Alena Herman scored 12 points to lead the Mountaineers.

Iron Mountain's four seniors were honored on Senior Night before the game. Gladstone's three seniors were also recognized and given flowers during the ceremony. This recognition came because last year, on Gladstone's Senior Night, the Mountaineer seniors were also honored.

Iron Mountain plans to make it an annual tradition at its school as well.

"It's really nice that at Gladstone we can pass that tradition on to other schools," said St. Cyr, who said she was surprised when they gave her flowers before the game.

With the regular season over, the Braves begin the MHSAA Class B District tournament with a semifinal game next Wednesday night against Escanaba. Tip-off is set for 7:00. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and at www.rrnsports.com.
