BOYNE CITY---The Gladstone Major Girls (age 11-12) won their second straight state tournament game on Friday, beating fellow U.P. team Portage Lake, 11-0, in Boyne City.
Gladstone had only four base hits, but took advantage of eight walks.
Sydney Herioux had a triple and a single, Morgan Letteriello added a double, and Maddie Ahlgren contributed a hit.
Brittany Schwartz threw all four innings, as Gladstone beat the Houghton-area team by the mercy rule.
She struck out six batters and walked just one.
Gladstone qualified for Sunday's state quarterfinals with a 2-0 record. The girls have their final pool play game on Saturday against Rochester Hills. Game time is 2:00.
The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. Portage Lake (1-1) faces Charlevoix.
