WELLS---The Escanaba Eskymos started fast Tuesday night against the undefeated Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils. But the visitors battled back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Eskymos, 4-2, on Parents Night at the Wells Sports Complex.
The Eskymos, playing just 24 hours after beating Negaunee on the road, got two first period goals from senior Steve Wood.
Junior Levi Wunder assisted on both goals, giving him five assists in two nights. One of the goals was originally awarded to Nick Aird, but was changed to Wood after the game.
But the 2-0 lead didn't last as the Soo's Nick LaCross scored at the 11:34 mark of the first period to give his team a spark.
It stayed a 2-1 Eskymo lead until the Soo's Abby Roque scored late in the second period to tie the game, and then she scored on a tip early in the third period to make it 3-2. Kolbe Peller scored on the power play to make it 4-2.
Escanaba had a power play opportunity in the third period, but could not cash in. The Eskymos also failed to score when they pulled the goaltender for an extra attacker.
Sault Ste. Marie (7-0-0) outshot Escanaba (4-2-0), 33-27. Soo goaltender Nick MacKenzie made 25 saves for the win. Nick LeMire had 29 stops for the Eskymos.
ESCANABA 7, NEGAUNEE 0---On Monday in Negaunee, the Eskymos beat the Miners, 7-0, to extend their winning streak to four games. Six different Escanaba players scored goals, with Nick Aird leading the way with two goals.
Defenseman Matt Casey scored his first goal as an Eskymo to make kit a 2-0 game with 41 seconds left in the first period. Steve Wood, Dan Ritter, Calvin Pinar, and Derek Chaillier also scored for the Eskymos. Three Escanaba players had three-assist playmakers: Pinar, Chaillier, and Levi Wunder. Escanaba outshot Negaunee, 49-7.
