MARQUETTE---The Escanaba High School boys cross-country team was disappointed a year ago when they went undefeated all season long, only to finish second to the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula State Finals.
But this year, the Eskymos were not the overwhelming favorites to win the trophy. So this time, runners-up will do just fine. Marquette won the championship on its home course in Harvey on Saturday with 42 points. The Eskymos were second with 75 points.
Marquette's Lance Rambo won the race in a blistering 16 minutes, 56 seconds. His teammate, Robert Lieboldt, was second in 17:07. For the Eskymos, Joey Wolfe was fifth overall in 17:29, and EHS teammate Eric Cousineau took seventh in17:36.
Escanaba sophomore Tyler Hardwick just missed getting a medal, finishing 16th.
Gladstone's top runner was Ryan Hubert, who finished 50th in 20:06. His Braves teammate, Andy Olesak, finished 51st in 20:14.
