WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.---The South Bend, Ind., Senior Girls (age 15-16) won the Senior Softball World Series championship on Saturday.
The Indiana District Eleven team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a 5-1 win over Lombardia, Italy, in the World Championship game in Sussex County, Delaware.
Brooke Versmesse pitched four innings and Nichole Kirkpatrick pitched three for the Indiana girls. Veronica Rodriguez had two hits and Shannon McCarthy had two runs batted in.
The Indiana girls finished third in last year's World Series.
This is the same Indiana team that the Escanaba Senior Girls faced in the Central Regional Championship game last week in South Bend.
In that game, Escanaba took a 3-0 lead early in the game before errors led to a big inning for the host South Bend team.
And now, they're Senior Little League Softball World Champions.
GROSSE POINTE BOYS GOING TO WORLD SERIES---The Grosse Pointe Woods Shores Major Boys (age 11-12) won the Central Regional championship on Saturday, beating the Jackie Robinson team from Chicago, 10-3, in Indianapolis.
They become the first Michigan team to go to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., since 1996. Escanaba went to the big show in 1957.
This Grosse Pointe Woods team won this year's Michigan state championship right here in the Upper Peninsula...in Ishpeming.
The suburban Detroit team beat Iron Mountain North and Sault Ste. Marie as part of its state championship in Ishpeming.
In Saturday's regional championship game, Chad Lorkowski was dominant. He may be 12 years old, but he is 6-foot-2, and weighs 200 pounds.
Lorkowski hit a three-run homer in the first inning, then hit another home run in the second inning. And he earned the win on the mound.
Antonio Moceri also hit a home run for Grosse Pointe, which will play California next Friday at the Little League World Series in Williamsport.
OTHER MICHIGAN LITTLE LEAGUE TEAMS DID WELL AT REGIONALS
