Munising Girls, Jeffers Boys Win D-3 Golf UP Titles

ESCANABA---The Bark River-Harris Broncos girls golf team and the North Central Jets boys team both did well at the MHSAA Division Three Upper Peninsula golf championships Thursday afternoon in Delta County.

At the Escanaba Country Club, the NCA boys shot a 344, eleven strokes behind champion Painesdale-Jeffers (333). Bessemer was second with 335 strokes.

The Jets' Tyler Polfus led the way with an 82, with Andy Estrada shooting an 84 and Dylan Pohl firing an 89. Nick Sexton shot a 92.

Watersmeet's Micheal McGrath was the medalist, shooting a 77. Carney-Nadeau's Hunter Eichhorn, an eighth grader, shot a 78 and was tied for second with Bessemer senior Derek Ghelter. Cedarville's Sam Eberts shot an 80, good for third place.

Mid Peninsula's Brett Branstrom, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Northern Michigan University, shot an 85. Big Bay deNoc's Alex Ranguette also shot an 85. Munising's Mike Mannisto shot an 84 and Tyler Tweedle carded an 87.

There were 22 teams from across the Upper Peninsula at the boys meet.

The girls D-3 meet was held at the Highland Golf Course, just down the road between Escanaba and Bark River. And the Munising Mustangs cruised to the U.P. championship, beating second place Bark River-Harris by 19 strokes (416-435).

The Mustangs had two girls break the 100 mark and won the school's first U.P. golf championship. Carla Nottmeir shot a 93 and Molly Mattson carded a 99.

St. Ignace's Margo Brown was the medalist with a 90. Nottmeir was second with her 93, and Bark River-Harris's Savanna Stenberg was third with a 94. DeTour eighth grader Madison Wilke fired a 95 to finish fourth, and Munising's Molly Mattson and Forest Park's Lexi Gussert both carded 99's to tie for fifth place.

They were the only six ladies' golfers to crack the 100 mark in the meet.

There were ten teams that had enough golfers to have team scores, while eight other  U.P. teams brought less than the minimum golfers needed to calculate a team score.
