EBEN JUNCTION---The Gladstone High School baseball team bounced back from a rough weekend tournament performance by sweeping a doubleheader from Superior Central, 9-4 and 8-0, Monday afternoon in Eben Junction.
"Some good things did happen for us," Gladstone Manager Don Lauscher said. "We hit the ball better than we did Saturday. We have some things to clean up, though."
In the opener, Gladstone trailed, 3-2, in the fourth inning before the bats woke up. Blake Ballard and Hunter Garling both had a single and a triple in that game. Christian Groleau earned the victory on the mound to earn his sixth win of the season.
In the second game, senior Lucas LaCosse pitched a complete-game three-hitter, and he led the way at the plate by going 4-for-4 (three singles, one double).
Lauscher was happy to see his team bounce back from the two losses at a tournament to Sault Ste. Marie over the weekend. The Braves lost to Cheboygan, 3-2, in their first game, with Chiefs ace Damon Proctor striking out 17 batters in the six inning game.
"He just overpowered our guys," Lauscher said.
Gladstone did manage to win one game at that tournament on Saturday, 13-3, over the Sault Ste. Marie (Ont.) Black Sox. Justin Jurek hit a grand slam home run (his first-ever long ball), and he got the pitching win on the mound.
After Monday's games, the Braves improved to 15-8 on the season. Gladstone travels to Marquette for a doubleheader on Friday. Game time for the opener is 4:00. The games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
