Cross Country History: NCA Jets Win 1st U.P. Title!

MARQUETTE---If you thought Jerry Root had a wide smile on his face two weeks ago when his North Central Jets won ther first-ever Central U.P. Conference cross-country championship, you should have seen his smile on Saturday in Marquette.

Root watched as his boys won the school's first-ever MHSAA Upper Peninsula state championship in dramatic fashion. It took contributions from every runner before the Jets slipped past Pickford, 66-68, to win the team trophy.

Jets freshman Seth Polfus ran the course in 18 minutes, 18 seconds, to finish second overall behind Stephenson's Connor Cappaert, who won the race in 17:39.

NCA sophomore Bryce Holle was fourth overall (18:22). Jets senior Josh Granquist, just hours after leading the NCA football team to a win over Bark River-Harris, finished 18th with a gutsy run of 19:31. Jonathon King finished 32nd.

Munising, which was second behind NCA in the CUP meet, did not have enough boys to have a team score. Brett Hannah, who won that race at the Gorzinski farm, struggled with an injury on Saturday and wound up in tenth place overall.

Carney-Nadeau's Dionte Blahnik finished sixth overall in 18:34. Superior Central's Nick Maki was the area's other medalist, finishing in fifth place overall (18:27).

IN THE GIRLS RACE---The Munising Mustangs won their first-ever MHSAA Division Three U.P. title with 46 points.  Cedarville was second with 54 points and Dollar Bay was third with 55. Only five Division Three teams had enough girls for team scores.

Munising's Marissa Immel was second overall, finishing in 21:16. Anna Baij took 11th spot, and Julia Jacques ended up 14th overall.

Rudyard's Kaylee Hoolesma won the race in 20:32.
