Tech Pounds Northern In Women's Soccer Rivalry

MARQUETTE---Michigan Tech received goals from five different players including one in the first three minutes on its way to a 5-0 non-conference victory at Northern Michigan today. Alyssa Hynnek scored 2:18 into the contest for the eventual game winner.

Tech faced a strong head wind in the opening half, but kept the ball on the ground and managed to get two goals. Hynnek collected a loose ball in the box and put it home for a 1-0 lead. Then with the final minute winding down in the half, Lindsey Van Rooy booted home her second goal of the season.

Mackenzie Jordan, Katie Pappas and Kathryn Fife scored at the 48th, 54th and 83rd minutes, respectively, to figure into the offensive explosion. The first two of those goals came off corner kicks. Fife's was a breakaway.

"The early goal set the tone, and even though we were playing into a ferocious wind in the first half, we executed our game plan," said Huskies head coach Michelle Jacob. "Northern tried to play a lot of long balls over the top, and our defense did a great job of countering that.

"It's always a tough game with NMU, but we started and finished great."

Tech held a 17-7 advantage in shots and scored on five of their 11 shots on net. Goalkeeper MaryBeth Spoehr made four saves in 86:30 of work to earn her second win of the campaign.

Michigan Tech improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory. NMU is now 0-4.
