Shorthanded Eskymos Open Boys Tennis Season

KAUKAUNA, Wis.----The Escanaba Eskymo Boys Tennis team opened its season on Saturday at the Kaukauna Invitational in Wisc0nsin.

But the team traveled with mostly freshmen and sophomores because 22 of the team's 40 players were gone....either at the Junior/Senior Prom, or taking ACT College Exams. Despite that, the Eskymos managed to finish sixth overall.

"The tournament had some really big schools and good tennis players there," Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen said. "Kaukauna, Kimberly, Appleton West, Green Bay East, Plymouth, Shawano, St. Mary's Central were some of the teams there."

In singles matches, Steve Wood finished fourth, Steve Prica took sixth, Dom Aos eighth, and Blake Hereau was seventh. In doubles matches, Zach Westerberg and Matt Judson finished sixth....Tyler Borkadi and Ben Larsen were also sixth, and Richard Yan and Elliot White took eighth place.

"We played pretty good considering the scope of talent at the tournament and our lack of experience," Hansen said. "We hit pretty consistently and some of our young players

got some valuable experience that they wouldn't have otherwise gotten."

"Only two of those players had varsity experience last year so I am especially proud of these guys for the way they played."

The Eskymos host West Iron County in their home opener on April 24th.
