GRAND INNING: Lamb Powers Esky Past Dakota

WATERFORD, Mich.---History was made for the Escanaba High School softball program during a rare Sunday game in suburban Detroit.

Eskymo senior Katey Lamb hit two home runs in the same inning, and not only that, they were both grand slam homers.

Something that is even more rare than a high school softball game on a Sunday. The Eskymos routed the Macomb Dakota Cougars, 16-1, to finish the weekend with a 4-1 record.

Lamb will go down in the history books at Escanaba High School with an accomplishment that may take many years to duplicate.

But she was low-key about it as the team prepared to make the eight hour lomg drive back to the Upper Peninsula after winning four of five games that were played in a total of about 30 hours at one of the best high school softball tournaments in Michigan.

“It felt pretty good because I kind of struggled all weekend, so it was good to end like that,” Lamb said. “I think we did pretty good (as a team). I think it’s going to get us a lot of momentum going into the week. We have a lot of games coming up.”

Lamb also had a single at the plate, giving her three hits, nine total bases, and eight runs batted in for a contest that was called in the fifth inning by the mercy rule. Her grand slam home runs brought home eight of the 2 runs that Escanaba scored in the fourth inning to take control of the game.

Lamb was the star, but other girls also stepped up in that lengthy fourth inning. Maddy Mott had a two-run double to left field after Harlee Coolman had an RBI single to right. McKenzie Engebretsen also contributed three hits and two runs batted in for the Eskymos.

Earlier in the day Sunday, Escanaba fell behind Flat Rock, 7-2, but scored eight unanswered runs to pull out a 10-7 victory over the Rams. Coolman and Clara Braun both hit home runs during the comeback, and Grayson LaMarche came on to pitch the final three innings. She struck out all nine batters she faced in relief of starting pitcher Landry Bray.

Escanaba improved to 29-3 on the season, but there’s no rest. The Eskymos face Marquette in a doubleheader on Monday, and then host Gladstone for two more games on Tuesday.
