ESCANABA---The Escanaba Eskymos and Marquette Sentinels baseball teams combined for 30 runs and 30 base hits on Wednesday, as a swarm of gnats hung over Al Ness Field. Escanaba won the game, 20-10, in six innings. The Eskymos avenged a 4-0 loss to the Sentinels they suffered last week in Marquette, although in that game, Marquette had its ace, Dezzy Gleason, on the mound. This time, both teams used multiple pitchers in a game that took well over two hours to play. And the kids had to battle thousands of small flying insects that swarmed the home plate area. Escanaba jumped to a 9-0 lead, but Marquette didn't roll over, closing to within 9-6 in the fifth inning. And after Escanaba scored four times to take a 13-6 lead, Marquette battled back again, getting to within 13-10. But the Eskymos put the game away with seven runf o ruin the bottom of the sixth inning. The big hit for Escanaba was a two-run homer by Ashton Rymkos in the sixth inning, a rarity for Al Ness Field where the wind normally blows in and home runs are scarce. Rymkos had three hits and drove in four runs, and he pitched four innings to earn the victory on the mound. Bryce Bichler had four hits in six at-bats from the leadoff spot, and Brian Boutilier added three hits and drove in three runs as he moved to the #9 spot in the batting order. Marquette's Easton Jezewski had four hits and four runs batted in, and Gibby Jezewski had three hits and scored three times. Marquette used five pitchersm with Alex Brennan taking the loss. Eight of Escanaba's 20 runs were unearned, thanks to five Marquette errors. The junior varsity game was won by Escanaba, 10-5. |
