Upper Peninsula Wrestlers Battle On At Ford Field

DETROIT---Ten high school wrestlers from the Upper Peninsula ha a shot at finishing on the podium at Ford Field on Saturday as the MHSAA state individual finals wrap up. There were 29 Upper Peninsula wrestlers at the beginning of the day, and 19 of them lost twice on Friday and were eliminated. Three of them won their first two matches to advance to the semifinals: Gladstone's Trevor Thorbahn, Kingsford's Max Sundquist, and North Central's Cooper Raab. All three lost their matches, but will wrestle Saturday with a shot at finishing as high as third place. Seven other UP wrestlers battled through the consolation brackets and are still alive.
They are: Ginger Majurin (Kingsford), Maddy Corrigan, and Maizy Olson (North Central), Ben Wilson (Gladstone), Evan Aiskainen (Negaunee), Landon Weber (Manistique), Sawyer Kuezner (Sault Ste Marie). They will be back at it at 9 am Saturday.

RRN UPDATE 27: Ten UP wrestlers will go for podium spots on Saturday. Max Sundquist and Ginger Majurin (Kingsford), Cooper Raab, Maddy Corrigan, and Maizy Olson (North Central), Trevor Thorbahn and Ben Wilson (Gladstone), Evan Aiskainen (Negaunee), Landon Weber (Manistique), Sawyer Kuezner (Sault Ste Marie). RRN UPDATE 26: Gladstone’s Trevor Thorbahn loses a 18-3 decision to Gavin Craner of Whitehall High School in the D-3 190-pound semifinal at Ford Field. Thorbahn will wrestle in the consolation rounds tomorrow and could finish as high as third.
RRN UPDATE 25: Kingsford’s Max Sundquist loses a 17-2 decision to Kole Katschor of Dundee High School in the D-3 175-pound semifinal at Ford Field. Sundquist will wrestle in the consolation rounds tomorrow and could finish as high as third.
RRN UPDATE 24: North Central’s Cooper Raab battles hard but loses a 9-4 decision to Austin Garcia of Lawton High School in the D-4 126 pound semifinal at Ford Field. Raab will wrestle in the consolation rounds tomorrow and could finish as high as third.
RRN UPDATE 23: The consolation rounds are over. Seven UP wrestlers have survived and will wrestle again on Saturday for a shot at podium finishes. Now we sit back and wait for the three UP wrestlers to go in the quarterfinals this evening: Trevor Thorbahn, Cooper Raab, and Max Sundquist.

RRN UPDATE 22: Update from Ford Field. Sault High’s Sawyer Kuezner bounced back from his heartbreaking quarterfinal loss with a win in the consolation round….on a tiebreaker. What goes around comes around. Kuezner wrestles again tomorrow. Both of Iron Mountain’s wrestlers, Diangelo Saldana and Dan Manier, have been eliminated in the consolation rounds after going 1-1 earlier in the day.
RRN UPDATE 21: Update from Ford Field. NCA’s Maddy Corrigan has won her second match in the consolation rounds, beating Harmony Gonzales of Oxford, 8-7. She will wrestle again tomorrow! Kingsford’s Ginger Majurin bounces back from an earlier loss to pin Jolene Thompson of Romeo in 2:43. Majurin finishes the day 2-1 and wrestles again tomorrow.
RRN UPDATE 20: Gladstone’s Ben Wilson has won his consolation match, 4-1, over Calvin Marshall of Ogemaw Heights. He will wrestle again tomorrow. Kingsford’s Teagan Ray and Tyler Bray are eliminated. Manistique’s Landon Weber has received a bye and will wrestle tomorrow. Munising’s Cayden Wieczorek has lost twice and is eliminated.
RRN UPDATE 19: The tournament is over for Escanaba’s Kaleb Gagne. He lost his consolation match to Jayce Curtis of Thornapple Kellogg in a wild 20-17 decision. Great day of wrestling for Kaleb!

RRN UPDATE 18: North Central’s Maizy Olson lost her quarterfinal match on a 9-2 decision, but she bounced back to pin Lillian Teachworth of Lake Odessa in the consolation bracket in 3:57. She’ll wrestle again tomorrow!
RRN UPDATE 17: Sault High’s Sawyer Kuezner has lost his quarterfinal match, on a tiebreaker, to Adin Young of Plainwell. Heartbreaking. He’ll be in the consolation round shortly.
RRN UPDATE 16: What a quartrfinal matchup. Escanaba’s Kaleb Gagne against defending three-time finalist Owen Segorski of Lowell High School. Segorski was born and raised in Escanaba before moving downstate. Segorski wins on a pin in 2:52 to keep his hopes for a third state title alive. Gagne moves to the consolation bracket.
RRN UPDATE 15: Negaunee’s Evan Aiskainen was pinned in his quarterfinal match by Danny Vaneeckhoutte of Erie Mason in 1:45 to drop into the consolation round. But the Miners freshman bounced back to beat Alex Moore of Grayling on a tech fall 16-1 , and he will wrestle again tomorrow.
RRN UPDATE 14: Gladstone’s Trevor Thorbahn is moving on to the state semifinals! The 190-pound junior won his second match of the day today at Ford Field, beating Paul Stanczak of Armada on a pin in 1:57. Thorbahn stays undefeated on the season and wrestles again tonight.

RRN UPDATE 13: Kingsford’s Max Sundquist is on to the semifinals after a 16-2 win over Connor Hadden of Algonac. Also moving to the semifinals is North Central’s Cooper Raab after a 20-5 tech fall win over Andrew Frazier of Riverview Gabriel Richard. Both wrestle tonight for a shot in tomorrow’s finals.
RRN UPDATE 12: North Central’s Maddy Corrigan stays alive in the consolation bracket with a pin over Milanya Shea of Ferndale in 53 seconds. Escanaba’s Aubree Croasdell is eliminated. Next up: the quarterfinal rounds for nine UP wrestlers.
RRN UPDATE 11: North Central’s Myles Nehring has been eliminated. Bark River-Harris’s Mitch Corrigan and Charles Walker have both been eliminated. Kingsford’s Brettin Rouse has been eliminated. Manistique’s Gavin Ziminski has been eliminated.
RRN UPDATE 10: Manistique’s Landon Weber stays alive in the consolation bracket with a 10-5 win over David Lane of White Pigeon. Emeralds’ Jonathan Weber is eliminated. Munising’s Korbyn Smith is eliminated. Rudyard’s Dalton Savoie is eliminated. St. Ignace’s Jedidiah Brady and Gabriel Werkheiser are both eliminated.

Kingsford’s Reed Degroot has been eliminated, but Flivver Tyler Bray stays alive with a pin over Sami Barawi of Notre Dame Prep in 3:35.

RRN UPDATE 8: Sault Ste. Marie’s Sawyer Kuenzer defeated Tristian Philbeck of Carleton-Airport on a 7-0 decision in his first match. Bark River Harris’s Mitch Corrigan and Charles Walker both lost their first matches by pins. Kingsford’s Bretin Rouse, manistique’s Gavin Ziminski, and North Central’s Miles Nehring were all pinned in their first matches. This wraps up the first round of wrestling with nine Yoopers on to the quarterfinals and 20 others into the consolation rounds.
RRN UPDATE 7: Gladstone’s Trevor Thorbahn beat Caden Minton of Corunna on an 11-7 decision. He stays undefeated on the season. Fellow Gladstone Brave Ben Wilson took a loss on a pin in 40 seconds and now goes to the consolation bracket.
RRN UPDATE 6: The UP now has seven wins and 13 losses among its 29 wrestlers competing at the state finals. The latest: Munising’s Korbyn Smith lost his first match on a pin…Escanaba’s Aubree Croasdell lost her first match on a Tech Fall…Eight UP wrestlers still to go, plus another who drew a first round bye.
RRN UPDATE 5: Two more wins for the U.P. at Ford Field this morning: Kingsford’s Max Sundquist needed just 22 seconds to pin Isaac French of Montague….and on the ladie’s side, Kingsford’s Ginger Majurin pinned Samantha Bonevitz of Otsego in 2:48.

RRN UPDATE 3: Rough morning for a few UP wrestlers at Ford Field. Iron Mountain’s Diangelo Saldana lost, 12-5, in his first match…Manistique’s Johnathan Weber lost his first match, 18-0…Rudyard’s Dalton Savoie was pinned in his first match…St. Ignace’s Jedidiah Brady was pinned in his first match….St. Ignace’s Gabriel Werkheiser lost his first match, 20-2….Maddy Corrigan of North Central lost her first match, 15-4. All still alive in the consolation rounds with a shot to reach the podium.
RRN UPDATE 2: Cooper Raab of North Central beat Rockne Hamilton of Centreville, 8-7. Also….Teagan Ray of Kingsford pinned Kashton Atwood of Grant HS in 4:19.
