The win was the second for the Indians over Niagara this week, and improved the team's record to 4-0 on the early season. Austin Pepin threw a complete-game shutout for the Indians, who will play against Norway in the tournament semifinals Sunday morning.
![]() It was Gladstone's second win over Niagara this week, but unlike Tuesday's 14-1 win, this game was close for a while. Niagara pitcher Ryan Erickson kept his team in the game for the first three innings, and the Indians led just 1-0 on a bases-loaded walk to Trent Rutter in the bottom of the second inning.
Rutter, a Superior Central High School graduate playing for the Indians for the first time, added an RBI single in the fourth inning to give Gladstone a 2-0 lead.
Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded, Pepin helped his own cause with a two-run single to right field, bringing home Cooper Sanville and Isaac Ketchum to make it a 4-0 game. That was all for Erickson, who threw 93 pitches for Niagara.
The Indians went to work against the Niagara bullpen, scoring four runs to end the game on the tournament's eight-run mercy rule. Aedan Creten's two-run, opposite field, double to put the game out of reach.
Pepin threw all six innings, giving up four hits. He struck out six and walked only one. Erickson took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits and seven walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Gladstone faces Norway in the tournament semifinals Sunday morning at Don Olsen Field, after all of Saturday's games were rained out. Game time is 10:30 ET. The other semifinal is Plover (Wis.) against Sheboygan (Wis.), with the championship game set for 1:30 Sunday afternoon in Escanaba. ![]() |
