Two UP Wrestlers Win State Titles; Six More Medal

AUBURN HILLS, Mich.---Two St. Ignace wrestlers repeated as state champions and six other Upper Peninsula boys reached the podium Saturday as the state individual tournament wrapped up at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Saints 171-pounder Galloway Thurston defeated Sandusky's Pat Brown in Saturday night's Division Four final, and 215-pounder Joe Ostman had an easy 17-1 win over Kevin Koenig of Laingsburg to win his third straight title.

Menominee 135-pounder Chris Briar and St. Ignace 130-pounder Rich Bentley lost their championship matches Saturday night and finished as runners-up.

Escanaba junior Travis Heller ended up finishing in fifth place in the 152-pound weight class, after finishing eighth last year as a sophomore.

Rudyard's Jimmy Spencer finished sixth in Division Four, Iron Mountain's Jared Gauthier finished eighth, and Sault Ste. Marie's Steven Kymes lost his final match on Saturday to finish sixth and become the eighth Yooper to medal.

The individual state finals started on Thursday at the Palace with 26 U.P. boys in action.

Gladstone had seven wrestlers at the Palace, and six of them lost both Thursday and Friday. Josh Kadish won his 145-pound consolation match Friday, but lost later on.
