TOUGH STRETCH: 'Cats Lose To Ferris State 56-20

The Northern Michigan University football team lost to a nationally-ranked top ten team for a second straight week on Saturday, falling to No. 7 Ferris State, 56-20, at the Superior Dome. The loss follows last week's setback against top-ranked Grand Valley State.
FERRIS STATE STORY:
The nationally seventh-ranked Ferris State Bulldogs put together one of their most complete performances of the season on Saturday (Oct. 29) as the Bulldogs cruised to a 56-20 win over Northern Michigan inside the Superior Dome in Marquette.
In FSU's first trip to the dome in four years, the Bulldogs racked up more than 600 yards of total offense and built a commanding first-half lead en route to the victory.
With the win, FSU improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Carson Gulker earned the start and accounted for five touchdowns in the triumph while playing only the first half at the offensive controls. He led a balanced FSU offense that compiled 301 rushing yards and 308 passing yards in the game.
Gulker completed 15-of-21 passes for 224 yards and two scores in addition to running for a team-high 111 yards on 14 carries and three TD's. Jesse Rivera played the entire second half and ran for 54 yards while throwing for 84 yards and a touchdown on seven-of-nine passing.
FSU was led in the receiving game by slot receiver CJ Jefferson with six grabs for 93 yards and score. A total of seven different receivers caught balls for the Bulldogs and three hauled in touchdowns, including Jefferson, Dezmin Lyburtus and Tyrese Hunt-Thompson.
Defensively, the Bulldogs were paced by standout Caleb Murphy, who had a pair of sacks and tackles for loss in addition to five stops. Cyntel Williams added five tackles and an interception.
Ferris State built a 14-0 lead after the opening quarter and pushed the margin to 42-14 at halftime as FSU twice stopped the Wildcats on downs on their own half of the field in the second period, leading to short offensive drives. Ferris State did not punt in the game until late in the second half. FSU eventually pushed the margin to 49-14 with an early second half scoring drive.
NORTHERN MICHIGAN STORY MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University Football team welcomed the defending National Champion and #7 team in the nation, the Ferris State University Bulldogs to town. The Bulldogs led from start to finish in a 56-20 win over the Wildcats. The Bulldogs won the toss and deferred to the second half, so the Wildcats got the ball first. Three plays and a punt for the Wildcats on offense.
After one-quarter of play, the Bulldogs led the Wildcats 14-0.
The Bulldogs got the ball to start the second half, they went right down the field with it and score another touchdown to go up 49-14.
Zach Keen was sacked on first down, to bring up a long second down, Keen then found Christian Powell for 15-yards to gain some yardage back. Faced with another fourth down, the Bulldogs came away with another sack and the Wildcats turned it over on downs.
After a few first downs, the Wildcats were able to force the first punt of the day for the Bulldogs.
Unable to get anything else on the drive, the Wildcats punted it back to the Bulldogs.

STATS LEADERS Zach Keen completed 11 passes for 203-yards and two touchdown passes on the day. Tyshon King was the leading rusher on the day with 18 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown. King also lead the way through the air with 98 receiving yards and a touchdown, on just three catches. Rad Premovic finished the day with 51 receiving yards and a touchdown. Will Borchert finished the day with six solo tackles and five assisted tackles for eleven on the day. Antonio Howard, DJ Hutcherson, and John McMullen all finished with eight total tackles. |
