Negaunee Miners New No. 1 Team; NCA Still Tops
MARQUETTE---The weekly Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association football poll was released Tuesday morning, and there's a new top-ranked eleven-man team: the Negaunee Miners. The North Central Jets are still tops in Eight-man. Negaunee improved to 6-0 with another blowout win in the West-Pac Conference last Friday night. The Miners leapfrogged Gladstone for the top spot after the Braves suffered their first loss of the season, a neutral site setback to Durand in a battle of state-ranked teams. Gladstone will have the chance to regain the top spot when the Braves host the Miners for Gladstone Homecoming this Friday night. The Braves will be playing their first home game in more than a month, after playing the last four games away from the Marble Field. In the Associated Press statewide poll, in Division Six, Negaunee is now ranked fourth in the state, wile Gladstone dropped to eighth after their loss to Durand. The Railroaders are ranked sixth. The only other U.P. team to get statewide ranking is Iron Mountain (#6 in Division Eight). As for the Eight-Man U.P. poll, North Centrak remains a unanimous choice for top spot, with a perfect 5-0 record. NCA gave up their first touchdown of the season last week to Stephenson, but still posted yet another mercy rule victory. Munising (6-0) and Norway (6-0) are ranked second and third, respectively. Forest Park (5-1) and Newberry (5-1) are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. The statewide A.P. Eight Man poll divides Division One and Division Two teams. North Central is easily the top-ranked team in Division Two, with Forest Park sixth and Cedarville tenth. In Division One, Munising is ranked fourth and Norway checks in at Number Seven.
