GLADSTONE---Nathan Hardwick's victory at #2 singles proved decisive as the Gladstone Braves beat the Ishpeming Hematites, 5-3, Monday at Pfotenhauer Park.
Hardwick defeated Ishpeming's Jake Clark on a tiebreak in the first set (7-6), then put the match away with a tough 7-5 victory in the second set.
"It was a very long match with Nathan winning the first set in a tiebreak," Gladstone Tennis Coach Dan Williams said. "The second set was close as well, with both players being really consistent in the back court. Nathan took advantage of some short balls toward the end of the match and came into the net and put the ball away."
"A good win for Nathan."
"Austin and Dean played much better tonight," Williams said. "They are starting to play better together as a team. They were really hitting there groundstrokes much better tonight, and attacking the net which made. Big difference."
"This is Sean's first year playing singles and he is doing a really good job," Williams said. "He is getting better with every match."
At #1 singles, Alec Miron continued his consistent play, beating Jaden Tucker in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. And Danny Pederson helped the Braves finish off a sweep of all four singles flights, beating Darius Yohe, 6-4, 6-0.
Ishpeming won the #2, #3, and #4 doubles matches.
