Escanaba 9-10 Girls Beat Gladstone To Win Title

GLADSTONE---The Escanaba 9-10 Girls won a district championship Monday night, beating Gladstone, 6-3, at the Gladstone High School fields.

Escanaba grabbed an early lead with Delaney McIntyre getting a two-run double in the first inning, but Gladstone used a couple of walks to tie the game at 2-2 in the third inning.

But Escanaba scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, with the big hit being a three-run triple by Madison Fulsher to make it a 6-2 ballgame.

Montgomery Pepin took the loss in the circle for Gladstone, giving up six runs on five hits in the six innings of work. Escanaba pitcher Aubrey Stropich earned the victory, allowing only one infield base hit and striking out eleven batters. She did, however, walk eleven batters.

Earlier in the day, Gladstone eliminated Kingsford, 12-2, in four innings.

On Saturday, in the tournament semifinals, Escanaba beat Gladstone, 5-1. Carley McInerney had an inside-the-park home run for Escanaba, and Aliyah Mylander added a triple. Stropich pitched a no-hitter, striking out ten batters. Pepin pitched well for Gladstone, striking out eight batters.

Escanaba advances to the sectional tournament, which will be held at the end of the week in Negaunee. The Esky-Negaunee games will be held on Thursday at 5:00 and 7:00. The third game, if necessary, is Friday at noon, also in Negaunee.

The winner of that sectional will head to the state finals in East Jordan.
