Escanaba Cubs Open Season With Five In Green Bay

ASHWAUBENON, Wis.---The Escanaba Cubs didn't even have a team a week ago as the high school baseball team played in the regional tournament. But it didn't take long for Tom Ohman to gather enough kids to field a team, and then quickly travel across the border to compete in the three-day Father's Day Tournament in the Green Bay area.

Escanaba split its two games on Friday, split another doubleheader on Saturday, and then lost a high-scoring game on Sunday to end the weekend with a 2-3 record.

But all five games were against tough opponents, setting the Cubs up for a tough regular season schedule over the next couple of months.

Austin Young in center field.
FRIDAY: GREEN BAY SHOCKERS 8, CUBS O---The Shockers scored four runs in the first inning and were well on their way to a win under the tournament's "eight run" mercy rule.

Zack Kimzerski's two-run homer was the big hit in that inning as Trent Schwalbach walked four batters in that inning. Cubs pitchers walked ten batters, and the Shockers had seven base hits.

The Cubs had just three base hits in the game: two by Nick Vandermissen and one by Devin Barton.

David Falish walked twice, but Cubs batters struck out seven times in the five innings, including all three outs in the second inning.

Matt Jensen steals third base.
FRIDAY: CUBS 3, KAUKAUNA 0---Kaukauna managed only three hits against Cubs pitcher Alex DeHaan, who earned the shutout victory despite seven walks.

DeHaan also drove in all three of his team's runs. His two-run single in the fifth inning scored Austin Young and David Falish, and DeHaan drove in Young with the third Cub run in the sixth inning.

Young had three hits in the game. Falish and Schwalbach both walked twice. Kaukana got just one runner to third base (in the sixth inning), and had two runners on base at the same time just once: in the fifth inning, on two walks.

Nick Vandermissen congratulated by Coach Tom Ohman on his HR.
SATURDAY: MANITOWOC 8, CUBS 7---Vandermissen had a two-run homer in the third inning. The Cubs led, 4-3, after three innings of play. But Manitowoc scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead.

It was 8-4 in the sixth inning when Escanaba scored three times, as Falish got a triple to bring home Ian DeMarse and Young.

But the Cubs could not score in the seventh inning, as Andrew Kausak walked but was stranded when DeMarse struck out to end the game. Young had two hits, drew a walk, and scored three runs.

Matt Jensen took the loss on the mound.

Trent Schwalbach's home run.
SATURDAY: CUBS 8, SHEBOYGAN 7---The Cubs won this game in walk-off fashion after blowing a 5-0 lead early in the game. Schwalbach ripped a three-run homer in the first inning, scoring Young and Vandermissen.

In the second inning, Schwalbach hit a sacrafice fly to the deepest part of the ballpark.

Escanaba's lead disappeared as errors and a few hits off of pitcher Bailey Lamb led to a 5-5 tie in the fourth inning. The Cubs trailed, 7-5, in the sixth inning when Vandermissen hit his second home run of the weekend to make it a 7-6 game.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, Kausak led off with a walk. Jensen popped up, and Justyn Doucette grounded into a force play for the second out. Young walked to put two on, then Falish singled to tie the game. Vandermissen's grounder to short was missplayed and the inning run scored, giving the Cubs a "walk-off" win.

SUNDAY: KAUKAUNA 10, CUBS 7---The Cubs met Kaukauna for the second time in the tournament, but unlike the earlier shutout win against the Wisconsin squad, the Cubs didn't have enough pitching left and lost, 10-7.

Andrew Kausak started on the mound, and he was given a big lead early on. Escanaba led, 4-0, in the third inning, scoring two runs in both the first and third innings.

But Kaukauna scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to earse that Cub lead.

Escanaba took a 7-5 lead with three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, with DeHaan and Lamb each getting run-scoring hits.

But Kaukauna got three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead, 8-7, then added two incurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 10-7 game.

DeHaan, Falish, Lamb, and Schwalbach all had two base hits in the game in a losing effort. Young had a hit and two walks in the game.

Escanaba (2-3) travels to Marquette Tuesday night to face the Blues. Game time is 6:30. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
