WEST ISHPEMING---The Escababa High School boys golf team edged the Negaunee Miners by one stroke Tuesday to win the championship of the Kiwanis Invitational at the Wawonowin Country Club. The Escanaba girls finished second behind Houghton.
The Escanaba boys won with 333 strokes, with Negaunee one back in second place. Houghton finished third with 337 strokes. Iron Mountain was fourth (340), Calumet fifth (346), and Norway was sixth (364). There were ten teams in the tournament.
Escanaba's Dylan Gauthier was his team's top golfer, finishing tied for third with an 81. Nathan Rousseau was in a logjam tied for sixth place with an 83. John Kositzky was close behind with an 84, in a three-way tie for 12th overall. Calvin Pinar shot an 85.
The medalist was Houghton's Gunner Stein, who defeated Negaunee's Carter Mason in a playoff. They both shot the 18 holes with 76's.
For the girls, Houghton won with 391 strokes, with the Eskymos second with 393. Calumet was a distant third with 465 strokes. Iron Mountain took fourth spot with 472.
Escanaba freshman Paxton Johnson was the medalist, shooting an 89. Houghton's Karren Liston was second with a 92, and Gremlin Lindsey Sandell was third with a 93.
Escanaba's Megan Dagenais finished fifth with a 96, and Eskymo teammate Kaitlyn Cole took sixth spot with a 100. There were 52 girls golfers in Tuesday's tournament.
