Gladstone Outlasts Marquette For First Tennis Win

MARQUETTE---The Gladstone Braves won two marathon matches by 10-8 scores Wednesday afternoon to earn their first team tennis victory of the season, beating the Marquette Redmen, 5-3, in Marquette.

Gladstone's Nathan Hardwick, at #4 singles, lost his first set to Marquette's Braden Golisek, 6-4. But Hardwick rallied to win the second set, 6-0, and then came the lengthy third set, which Hardwick pulled out, 10-8.

Meanwhile, at #3 doubles, Gladstone's Jesse LaRose and Jonathon Douglas also fell down by a set, losing the opener, 6-4. They rallied to beat Marquette's Adam Skendzel and Dylan Nadeau in the second set, 6-4, and then also won the third set, 10-8.

"They were the last two matches playing," Gladstone Coach Dan Williams said. "It was intense."

The Braves won three of the four singles matches, with Ross Miron winning at #2 and Donny Pederson winning at #3. Both of them won in straight sets, and then sat down to watch their teammates play those marathon three-set matches.

"It feels good," Williams said. "The guys played some very good matches under some difficult, windy, cold conditions. Our singles had a very good day."

Gladstone also posted a win at #4 doubles from Sam Hill and Cooper Koski.

The Braves are off until Monday, when they host the Ishpeming Hematites at 4:30.
