Escanaba Cheerleaders Finish 8th At D3 State Finals

GRAND RAPIDS---The Escanaba High School Competitive Cheerleading team participated in the MHSAA Division Three state finals Saturday night at the DeltaPlex.
The girls finished eighth in the event with 732.26 ppoints, far behind the state champions from Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, which had 775.48 points. The Eskymos won the regional championship last weekend, beating njine-time defending regional champion Comstock Park in the process. Comstock Park also qualified for the state tournament, however, and finished fiifth at states on Saturday.
Esanaba senior Sunny Martineau was happy the team pulled through at regionals.
"Two years ago . . . In cheerleading, we didn't make it the last time I did cheer," Martineau told Local Three News. "We should have gone to states and we didn't. And just, I was very overwhelmed that I could finally go to states as a senior."
Kelsey Johnson, also a senior, spoke with Local Three News about the surprise of beating Comstock Park lasty week.
"I personally did not think it was possible to beat the team," she said. "I mean, I figured we would make it to states, maybe top four, but it was nuts that we got first." The numbers from Saturday night's state meet are:
