Wunder Enters '16 Eager For More Hockey Success

ESCANABA---Escanaba High School graduate Levi Wunder is seeing success in his post-high school hockey career in Canada.

And now, he has his sights on a college hockey career. Wunder was home in Escanaba over the holiday break, and took part in the Eskymo Alumni Game.

And just like old times, Wunder scored eight goals in a winning effort.

"It was great, but I'm a little bit out of shape," Wunder chuckled after the Alumni Game. "It was great to see all the guys again, put a few pucks past the goalie."

Now, this was an Alumni Game. Wunder is also doing it in the Great White North, in his first try at junior hockey in the Alberta Junior Hockey Association. Wunder is playing for the Drumheller Dragons, and he leads his team in scoring as a rookie.

In fact, Wunder was named the league's Player of the Month in December, with ten points in seven games during the month.

And Wunder has signed a Division One College Letter to attend the University of Alabama-Huntsville for the 2017-18 season.

"It's unbelievable," Wunder said. "You know, I got that 'fly-down' experience, and they've treated me great every step of the way. I couldn't be more excited about my position. And I'm just looking forward to another great year of (junior) hockey."

Wunder is the all-time leading scorer in Escanaba Eskymos history, scoring 46 goals and 46 assists for 92 points in his senior season. And now he will be the first Eskymo ever to play Division One hockey, and to do so on a full-ride scholarship.

"It's fantastic," Wunder said. "It feels great to take the load of paying for school off of my parent's shoulders, and to get that experience."

Wunder spent time after the alumni game signing autographs for several young kids who waited after the game ended. And who knows? If Wunder gets his way, those autographs may just be the worth a few bucks some day.
