Gladstone Boys Golfers Tie For First At U.P. Finals
WEST ISHPEMING----The Gladstone High School boys golf team saved its best for last.
The boys have been "middle of the pack" for most of the season everywhere they played, but at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division One Finals on Friday, the Braves were on the front of the leaderboard. Gladstone finished in a three way tie for first place by shooting a 329, but ended up losing in a tiebreaker to the Houghton Gremlins.
Braves senior Drew Scheeneman carded a 75 to lead his team, and he finished second overall behind medalist Mike Nagy of Manistique.
Nagy, a University of Tennessee golf recruit, broke par by shooting a 70.
Gladstone sophomore Dave Dykowski shot an 82, junior Ben Lasecki fired an 83, and senior Rich Hubert shot an 89.
As a team, the Braves had 329 strokes, tied with both Houghton and Menominee. But the Gremlins will get the U.P. Trophy on a tiebreaker based on their fifth-best player's score.
Calumet finished fourth with 330 strokes, and Escanaba was fifth, just ten strokes back, at 339. Eskymo senior Kevin Gendron closed his career by shooting an 80. He will play at Northern Michigan University on a scholarship next year.
DIVISION ONE GIRLS MEET---The Houghton Gremlins completed the golf championship sweep, as the girls won the title going away. Houghton had 365 stokes, while Calumet finished second with 387. Gladstone and Marquette ended up tied with 405 strokes. Callie Jensen was the Braves' top golfer, while Escanaba's Kelsey Motto had a 90.
