Michigan Tech Soccer Posts Shut Out In Minnesota

DULUTH, Minn.--- Lexi Herrewig and Jacqueline Mielke each scored twice, and the Michigan Tech defense pitched a shutout as the Huskies' women's soccer team defeated Minnesota Crookston 5-0 at Minnesota Duluth's Malosky Stadium.
The Black and Gold rattled off all five goals in an 11-minute span in the first half and finished the game with a 23-5 advantage in shots. Madeline Faust opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a header off a Herrewig corner kick.
Mielke scored the next two goals—in the 17th minute with a header off a long diagonal pass from Olivia Smith and in the 20th minute as she took a Janelle Riedl pass and got behind the defense.
Herrewig tallied her two markers just three minutes apart. The first was a through ball from Mielke that Herrewig finished in the 23rd minute. The second came on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper in which she fired the shot just as the goalie came out to play it.
Tech surrendered just two shots on goal in the game—one in each half. Jenna Phelpsstarted in goal and played the first 73 minutes before Meghan Riopelle saw her first action of the season and finished off the shutout.
"We played an absolutely phenomenal first half," said Tech coach Michelle Jacob. "We really looked sharp, supporting each other and controlling the ball and the game. To put five goals in during an 11-minute span is amazing."
After a 3-1 start on the road, Michigan Tech will finally play its first official home game on Friday (Sept. 18) evening. The Huskies host Ashland for a 5 p.m. start at Sherman Field.
