Eskymos Second, Broncos Fourth In Baseball Invite
![]() ESCANABA---The Shawano (Wis.) Hawks won the championship of the Bink's Coca Cola Baseball Invitational on Saturday in Escanaba. The Hawks beat Bark River-Harris, 6-2, and then pounded Escanaba, 13-2, in the championship game. Negaunee finished third. In Saturday's first game, Escanaba shut out Negaunee, 11-0. ![]() In the second game, Bark River-Harris battled the Hawks, but Broncos pitcher Drake Draze had problems in the first inning. He gave up two hits and a walk, and Shawano took a 2-0 lead on and RBI double by Chase Henning and an RBI single from Grant Wainio. Shawano scored an unearned run in the second inning before the Broncos came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Mike Hall led off the inning with a single, and then, with one out, Kadin Mustafa was hit by a pitch (again). With two outs and two strikes on him, Sam Hall came through with the base hit to bring BR-H to within 3-2. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Broncos got a leadoff single from Mike Hall. Cole Ray bunted him to second, but BR-H could not get the tying run home as Mustafa grounded out and Draze popped up. So, it stayed 3-2 entering the late innings. ![]() The Hawks scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-2. The last 12 Bronco batters went out in order. Draze kept the Hawks in check, for the most part, getting eleven batters to pop up. But Shawano was able to keep the lead all the way through the game beacuse its pitchers, Bendan Cummings and Dylan Sunnicht, combined to toss a three-hitter. Draze allowed six runs (five earned) on ten hits. He struck out three and walked three. In the third place game, Negaunee edged Bark River-Harris, 4-2. Grant Johnson earned the win on the mound. Cole Ray had an RBI single in the sixth inning for BR-H. In the championship game, Escanaba pitching ace Tyler Skufca had troubles against a hot-hitting Shawano team. The Hawks put up single runs in each of the first three innings, and Hawks pitcher Nate Laude shut the Eskymos down on just one hit. ![]() The big hits for the Hawks in that inning were a two-run double by Wainio, an RBI double by Zach Sousek, and an RBI single by Brandon Warrington. It looked like Shawano would mercy the game with a 10-0 lead in the fifth inning, but the Eskymos were able to keep it going with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Parker LaMarch walked and Justin Popelka singled. Brandon Punzel brought home the first run with a grounder, and Ostrander brought in the second with a sacrafice fly. Shawano (10-6) got icing on the cake in the top of the seventh inning as Henning launched a three-run homer to right field. The Hawks had 16 hits in the game. Escanaba (13-6) travels to Bay Port, Wis., for a doubleheader on Monday. ![]() |
