Escanaba High School Athletic Director To Resign

ESCANABA----Escanaba High School Athletic Director Dave Wilson announced on Tuesday that he is resigning after seven years on the job.

Wilson, who has worked for the district for 15 years, says he wants to go back into teaching, and will do some coaching.

"It was time," Wilson said. "I'm tired. It's a very time-consuming job. It's time for me to step back, take a breath. I've always considered myself to be a coach at heart. Coaching my daughters in the summer has opened my eyes to just how much I missed it."

Wilson was a teacher for eight years before moving into the administration to be the athletic director and assistant principal.

He has overseen a growth in sports during his tenure, and several sports were saved along the way by becoming self-funded.

The Escanaba High School offers 18 varsity sports for girls and boys.

"There's a lot of behind-the-secenes stuff that people don't know," Wilson said. "There's scheduling games, scheduling officials."

"There's making travel arrangements for our teams to go to away games. Sometimes, I feel like a travel agent," Wilson continued. "And then there's running Michigan High School Athletic Association post-season tournaments."

Wilson will stay on until early August.

"I have a lot of loose ends to tie up," Wilson said. "Schedules for the for the fall and winter schedeles. Getting officials for those contests. Making sure everything is right with our facilities. I have some coaches to hire in cheerleading and volleyball."

Wilson was named the Upper Peninsula Athletic Director of the Year back in the spring. Now, he will head back to the classroom as a social studies teacher.

"I'm looking forward to it," Wilson said. "I have met a lot of great people (as athletic director), made a lot of great friends. I'll still be around. Always an Eskymo."
